What is Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is a chronic inflammation of the liver caused by a virus. The disease progresses over many years and decades and over time leads to liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. Hepatitis C can also cause other diseases outside the liver such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. Every year 200 people in Switzerland die of Hepatitis C, as many as in road traffic, five times more than from HIV/AIDS.
